About LDT

Pre-Professional Students

Pre-professional students have the opportunity to develop the skills, experience, and discipline which are necessary foundations for a professional career. The LDT School has professionally experienced teaching staff and live piano accompaniment in some ballet classes. The curriculum is supplemented by visiting guest teachers, and various consultants offer lectures in dance-related topics throughout the year, adding further to the student’s education. The Nutcracker and the Family Concert performances are accompanied by the Niwot Timberline Symphony. The Spring Gala Performance has been composed and choreographed for the students of LDT. LDT is very proud to offer the opportunity of live and/or original music for these performances.

Performance Opportunities

LDT's pre-professional ballet students have several opportunities to exhibit their talents. This year the school presents The Nutcracker and a Family Concert accompanied by the Niwot Timberline Symphony. In April, Pinocchio will be performed in the Spring Gala Performance. The Spring Gala performance is a cycle of ballets composed by local composer Brian St. John and choreographed by Kristin Kingsley-St. John, Artistic Director of LDT. The six original ballets that comprise the Spring Gala cycle are (in order of premiere date): Cain: A Mystery, Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland, Hansel and Gretel, Suite de Ballet (a comedy), Pinocchio, and Scenes de Ballet. Periodically, LDT performs a family concert with the Niwot Timberline Symphony. This year, excerpts from Romeo and Juliet will be performed. In the past, Through the Looking Glass, a one-act ballet choreographed by Kristin Kingsley-St. John and composed by Brian St. John, was performed with narration. The other two Family Concert ballets that have been performed for Longmont audiences are Peter and the Wolf and Carnival of the Animals. These are all auditioned roles providing another facet of education to the students of LDT. The Children’s Division has two performance opportunities. The Holiday Recital is performed in December and the Annual Recital is performed in May. The Recital is a great way to see the achievement of our students. The culmination of class work with a performance is the epitome of dance education and we, at LDT, are proud to offer this opportunity to our youngest students twice a year. The Student and Adult/Teen Open Division has one performance opportunity per year. The Annual Recital in May allows students in various other dance forms to perform in a theatre with full lights and costumes. This experience is very valuable to the education of students of all dance art forms.

Recital Policy

All recital and performance forms must be completed and returned to the LDT office. If we do not receive a form, we will order costumes for the student and payment will the responsibility of the parent/guardian. We have added this requirement to prevent the disappointment of a child not having a costume to wear during a performance. If you do not plan to participate in a performance, make sure you return the appropriate form by the deadline to avoid being charged for costume(s).

Volunteer Opportunities

Like any arts organization, Longmont Dance Theatre depends on volunteers for critical support throughout the year. LDT encourages every family to participate in one (or more) volunteer opportunities. Volunteer sign-up sheets will be available on the 2nd Studio Viewing Window. Volunteer opportunities include, but are not limited to administrative, backstage, ushering, ticket sales, and load in/out. A very exciting volunteer opportunity is that of volunteering at the many theatre productions LDT puts on throughout the year. Please see the Performance Packet with further information for these wonderful volunteer opportunities.

Schedule Changes/Withdrawals

All changes must be approved by the School Director or the Instructor. Whenever a change in schedule occurs, a Class Change Form must be signed by the Instructor and the parent or person responsible for tuition. Completion of this form will allow us to accurately adjust the amount of tuition due; tuition will not be adjusted until this form is completed and signed. New students may always try their first class with no penalty, so long as they inform the office prior to taking the class. If a student chooses to withdraw after the second class, a penalty will be charged. Withdrawals in the first month of class will owe a $30 penalty (deducted from a refund of pre-paid tuition or paid as the difference between an installment payment minus any classes taken.) After the first month, a fee equal to 25% of the tuition due for the remainder of the semester will be charged. In lieu of refunds, LDT prefers to credit the full balance to future classes.

  • A minimum of four students must be registered per class or the class will be cancelled.
  • LDT’s class schedule may change due to enrollment.
  • Please see Tuition Rate Table for tuition rates.
  • Please see special tuition rates for the Ballet Program: Ballet Program Tuition Rates
  • The LDT Season is divided into a 16-Week Fall Semester, a 18-Week Spring Semester, and a 6 or 8-Week Summer Session.
  • Tuition is based on the number of class hours taken per week during a semester. It is a fixed rate that does NOT change based on the number of weeks per month, holiday closures or absences.
  • The student is responsible for the full tuition of the semester in which registered. Students accepted into LDT after the start of a semester will be charged pro-rated tuition for that semester.
  • Tuition is not transferable or refundable and may not be carried over as credit toward future LDT semesters (with the exception of class cancellation by LDT or student illness or injury with a note by a doctor).

Make Up Classes

Classes missed due to illness, injury or school/family commitments may be made up in a class of the same level or one level lower. Students are strongly encouraged to make up missed classes, as progress can be greatly affected by even one absence. Make-ups cannot be carried over into another semester or into a Summer Session. Tuition cannot be exchanged for missed classes, and no credits or refunds will be given for absences during a tuition period. Pro-rated tuition refunds will be given only if withdrawing from classes due to prolonged illness or severe injury, verified by a doctor’s certificate.

Dress Code Requirements

All students must wear appropriate attire and hairstyle to be admitted to class. No watches or jewelry may be worn during class, with the exception of small, secure earrings. The dress code enables students to remain focused during class. Please see the Class Attire page for specific class and age group dress code requirements.
